8TH ANNUAL PHC SHOW:
A NOTE FROM THE SHOW CHAIRPERSON
Our 8th Annual Show was another success and, despitethe heat and
humidity (again!), a good time was had by both exhibitors and dogs.
Access to the newly air conditioned buildings was a great help for all
this year. A million thanks to everyone who worked on the show both
before and the day of the show–including those behind thescenes. My
gratitude to all! To Sue Whaley, who did a
spectacular job with hospitality and arranging the Blessing of the
Hounds by the Reverend Eileen House and the Casting of the Hounds. To
Harry, Lisa, and Vince Miller who made sure that the grounds were
presentable and buildings were set-up. To Rita Holloway who ensured our
judges arrived from the airport and managed the show’s stewards. To
Charles Olvis and Elizabeth Muthard for making sure that the Breed
Seminars went off without a
hitch and to Patti Staub, Anne Legge, Norma Sellers, and Polly Smith
for each of their breed presentations. To Judy Tantillo for soliciting
and arranging the advertising in the catalogs. To Dr. Bob Smith for his
wonderful job making
announcements and for selling tickets to the barbecue. To Judy
Rothstein and Rosemary Martino for manning the Club Booth and
distributing trophies and selling catalogs.
To Damara Bolte for obtaining the trophies. To Ken Fox for being the
Vet on call. To Betty White for her terrific job with the Conformation
Match. To Charlene Stone for tackling on the first-ever CGC testing and
hounds only Obediencen and Rally Match. The culmination of our show
with the
barbecue and band was due in no small measure to the efforts of Vince
and John Miller. To Annie Andrews for coming Wednesday to help set-up
and bringing the projector for the seminars. And most importantly my
thanks to Jane Lodge who helped all along with show’s arrangements but
also helped set-up the day of the show.

REGULAR MEETINGS PROPOSED (AGAIN)
At our Nov 06 general membership meeting, members agreed to meet the
third Wednesday of each quarter. Since our annual meeting is in
January, meetings would then be held in April, July, and October. There
has been a longstanding
agreement to alternate the meeting locations
between Virginia and Maryland. Ingrid and Dirk Gleysteen have
graciously offered their home as the regular Maryland meeting place. We
are soliciting the membership to suggest or volunteer a Virginia
location that is within 10 miles of Fredericksburg, which is our club’s
territory.
Please contact Annie Andrews at (703) 815-2236 or
Annie.Andrews@osd.mil with your suggestions.
PHC PERFORMANCE EVENTS:
A NOTE FROM THE CHAIRPERSON
Great news! On July 24th, I received a letter from AKC stating that the
club has completed the AKC’s Plan OA match program requirements and
that we are now eligible to submit an application for a licensed
obedience and rally trial.
Although listed in the premium and catalog that I was a committee of
one, no one person could have pulled off the special performance events
at this year’s PHC Show. I had the support and encouragement from many
of the club
members who shared my vision of a "Complete Hound Day" for our Show
this year. I am very pleased that we made a profit from the performance
events offered (CGC® Testing and the Obedience and Rally Match). The
profit we saw was not only monetary but also, encouragement. All that
participated in the Rally Match are now pursuing Rally titles,
due to the learning experience gained at our Show. Of the 14 Rally
entries, 13 had never stepped foot into a Rally ring before our Match.
They went in cold and came out with the confidence that (with a little
polish) they could compete before year’s end to earn a Rally titles.
Thank you to everyone who helped pull off these events. PHC members
Ingrid Gleysteen, Annie Andrews, Harry Miller, Bob Smith,
Jane Lodge, Dr Andrew Kostic, Brigitte Greenberg, and Diane Myers.
Non-members Kim Waterworth, Hillary Frank, and Pat Spinazzola also
supported our events. A special thank you to our CGC Evaluator, Derry
Krause; our Obedience Match Judge, Dr. Andrew Kostic; and our Rally
Match Judge, Laurie Williams.Charlene Stone, Obedience & Rally
Match Chair 717-328-4941or Email quarters@embarqmail.com
PHC SHOW MATCHES
Conformation Match: Betty White chaired our
Conformation Match this year. The match was held in an air conditioned
in-building after the PHC Show concluded. Juanita Irvin judged the
sight hounds and Best Adult while Patti Staub judged the scent hounds
and Best Puppy. There were 15 entries with 14 shown and one absentee.
Trophies for Best Adult and Best Puppy were glass bowls donated by Rita
Holloway. Cooling collars were given to
2nd - 4th place for adults and toys were given to 2nd - 4th place for
puppies. Names not available at the time the Newsletter was finalized.
Obedience & Rally Match: Charlene Stone also took on
the challenging task of arranging a Plan A Obedience and Rally Match
for our club at this year’s show. The Match was held in air conditioned
building. Dr. Andrew Kostic judged the Obedience Match and Ms. Laurie
Williams judged the Rally Match. There were only 2 entries (both
whippets) in the Obedience Match (1 in Novice A and 1 in Novice B) and
14 entries in the Rally Match (13 whippets in Novice A and 1 whippet in
Advanced A). While participation was much less than anticipated, we
still met
the AKC requirements to conduct the A Match (e.g., a
premium and catalog were created, entries submitted to Charlene by a
specific entry date prior to the show). It was a new venue for our show
but one we hope to continue at future shows. We believe participation
will increase as word spreads that we are the only local club that
holds “hounds only” Obedience and Rally trials. We believethese trials
will encourage more hound owners to pursue
performance events, which will ultimately increase thepopularity of our future shows.
Obedience Match Results
High-in-Obedience went to Annie Andrews’ rescued
whippet, Lucy (Novice A) and 2nd place went to Hillary
Frank’s whippet, Whippoorwill All the Action (Novice B)
Rally Match Results
Advanced A:
1st Pat Spinazola’s whippet, Millrace River of Stars
Novice A:
1st Diane Myers’ whippet, Shaldra Mikater Jitterbug, JC
2nd – Annie Andrews’ whippet, Lucy (rescue)
3rd – Annie Andrews’ whippet, AgStone Whippoorwill Isabel
4th – Kim Waterworth’s whippet, Riley Roy’s Reveille
CANINE GOOD CITIZEN® AWARDS
Charlene Stone took on the challenge of arranging and handling all of
the CGC® testing for our club at this year’s show. Ms. Derry Krause was
our evaluator, who was well prepared to evaluate our hounds. She
explained the CGC® steps to the exhibitors and conducted evaluations in
a calm and professional manner. As a result, 14 more hounds
(Otterhounds and Whippets) now have their Canine Good
Citizen® awards. The owners were very excited to take part in the
testing and were very proud of what their dogs achieved. This was a
very rewarding experience for our Hound Show. We had many requests at
the show and since the show to offer CGC® testing at our future shows.

THANK YOU NOTES RECEIVED
Dear Ingrid - I have been remiss about thanking you and
Club for your wonderful hospitality to me during the Hound
Show. I love to come down there - you are such a great
group and in spite of the sometime brutal weather! the
Show is always fun. I plan to join so I can help next year! I
love my pewter key ring - I have my house keys on it now
and it will remind me of a wonderful day with wonderful "dog
people" Please give the Club my regards.
Sincerely Jane Fowler

Dear Mrs. Gleysteen,
I am sorry this thank you note is getting to you so late as we
have been away and I am just getting around to sending
this. I just want to thank you fro my wonderful assignment
and the honor of judging the Best Bred by Exhibitor Group
Competition. It is always a privilege to be part of the
Potomac Hound Club Judging Panel. My wife and I thank
you for your wonderful hospitality and the fantastic lunch.
Also my best to all the Officers and Committee members for
making this event so outstanding. Looking forward to being
with you again.
My best, Bill Barton

Dear Ingrid and Club, Thank you for a wonderful time
judging at your recent Potomac Hound Club Show. The
hospitality of your members was beyond compare! Best
regards, Karen Arends.
NEXT YEAR’S PHC SHOW PLANNING HAS STARTED
2008 PHC Show Chairperson: Ingrid Gleysteen
Judging Panel Selection Chairperson: Anne O’Reilly
Trophy Chairperson: Judy Rothstein
Catalog Advertising Chairperson: Judy Tantillo
Judging Panel Notice: Anne O’Reilly is soliciting
members for suggestions of sweeps provisional judges.
Please provide recommendations to Anne at 717-903-5506
or email at adorbasset@msn.com by August 15th as her
goal is to have the panel in-place by 4 September.
The Club will need to comply with the new AKC
requirements this year in order to hold our 2009 show;
therefore, we need to decide on the Category A and B
requirements (see column to the right).
We plan on continuing our educational seminars at next
year’s show but offer it on different breeds. Please contact
Ingrid with any suggestions.
We also plan to offer CGC® testing again at next year’s
show. The natural follow-on is to also offer Therapy Dog
testing in conjunction with CGC. We had hoped to include
it in this year’s show and had an evaluator ready to go but
ran out of time to include it in the Premium.
We also hope to offer an Obedience and Rally Trial at next
year’s show now that we have completed the necessary
AKC requirements. We will get the word out to the training
clubs in the area.
Volunteers Needed – If you are a member and have not
volunteered to help with the show, please do so. Your
participation is paramount to the success of our show and
club!
Please provide any other show recommendations to Ingrid
Gleysteen, PHC 2008 Show Chair at 301-854-3763 or
email at ingridgleysteen@earthlink.net as soon as possible

AKC NEWS – MARCH 2007
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS TO HOLD FUTURE
SHOWS
Our Club (as all others holding dog shows) must meet
certain new AKC requirements to be eligible to hold future
shows. If we do not meet these requirements in 2008, our
2009 show will not be approved by AKC. This is an effort
by AKC to ensure Clubs continue to promote the sport of
dogs. These eligibility requirements are detailed in the
attached AKC memo. The following is a summary of these
requirements and the items proposed for consideration by
the club are highlighted. Please provide suggestions or
other ideas for meeting these requirements via email by
either responding to all in the email that forwarded this
newsletter or sending an email to Annie.Andrews@osd.mil
who will forward email to the Board and Club Members.
AKC Requirements fall into two categories:
Category A: We must host at least two of the following
since our club holds its show outside the club’s territory
(within 10 miles of Fredericksburg, VA).

will not be held in conjunction with our show with an
emphasis on attracting and assisting new exhibitors.
2. Hold an “AKC Educational Match”
3. Provide AKC CGC® Test
4. Provide an “Active Public Education Program”
5. Provide “Other Educational or Outreach Programs”
Recommendation to Meet Category A Requirement:
Hold Independent AKC Sanctioned Match (#1 above)
and offer AKC CGC® Test at the Match (#3 above).
Category B: We must conduct and document at least four
of the following since our club holds its show outside the
club’s territory. These can be conducted outside the club’s
territory and must be identified in the premium.
1. Offer “Conformation and/or Obedience/Rally, or
Agility Training Classes” to the public.
